Commonplace Support

Commonplace is a reading app for classic literature: carefully made editions of the classics, a passage to keep each day, and a library and notes that stay on your own device.

Email support@readcommonplace.com. Please include your device (for example, “iPhone 16” or “Pixel 9”) and, for a problem with a book, its title and author. The build details at the bottom of Settings help too.

Common questions

Do I need an account? No. Everything in Commonplace works without signing in. Sync with Google is optional.

Where are my notes kept? On your device. If you turn on Sync with Google (Settings, then Sync), they are also kept in a private folder of your own Google Drive, so your other devices can have them. Commonplace never receives them.

How do I move to a new phone? Turn on Sync with Google on both, or use “Make a copy of Commonplace” in Settings, move the file to the new phone and choose “Load a copy of Commonplace” there. Books from the Commonplace catalogue download again by themselves; books you imported travel only inside a copy.

A book looks out of date. Open it in the Bookstore. If a newer issue of the edition exists, you will see “Update to the current edition”. Your notes, bookmarks and reading place are kept.

Where does a book’s text come from? Every Commonplace edition’s page in the Bookstore has “About this edition”: where its text came from and every correction made to it.

Can I read my own books? Yes. Import EPUB, plain text, HTML, Markdown, RTF, Word (.docx), FictionBook and DRM-free MOBI files. Commonplace does not open files protected by DRM.
